Profile
WHO ARE WE?
CBK Zuidoost has been the place for contemporary visual art from an intercultural, inclusive perspective for over 30 years. We connect a wide audience with contemporary art at various locations. We do so with a small enthusiastic team with heart for the matter, from our office in Amsterdam Zuidoost.
As a team, we believe art can make a big difference in our lives and in the world. Our mission is to make representative visual art accessible to everyone. And to make everyone a part of it by bringing together different areas of expertise and disciplines.
We research, collaborate, purchase, produce exhibitions, care for our visitors, encourage art-making and educational programs and so much more.
Works created for the CBK project “Revolte, Black Resistance in Pictures,” were carried in the 2023 Southeast Parade. Video: Naomi Rijkaard.
Working at CBK Southeast connects us to the history of not only our center, but also to Southeast. The Afro-Caribbean identity is our breeding ground. With us you will find art reflecting on current developments in society and in the world. Art for everyone, and CBK Zuidoost tries to connect, enrich, renew and broaden. Since the 1990s, artists and art lovers have been visiting us for inspiration.
MISSION
Centrum Beeldende Kunst Zuidoost programs contemporary visual art from an inclusive perspective and connects a wide audience with contemporary art in a variety of locations. This is done with exhibitions, an artist-in-residence program, temporary and permanent art commissions, educational projects and an art library with gift shop. High artistic quality and broad public reach are equal starting points for CBK Zuidoost. CBK Zuidoost is inspired by the specific context of Southeast and at the same time – with its activities and partnerships – is important to the local and international art world.
VISION
CBK Zuidoost tests artistic quality against the usual criteria such as authenticity, eloquence and use of materials. The intercultural society of Amsterdam and even more so the Afro-Caribbean society of the Zuidoost district – where CBK Zuidoost is located – is a continuous source of inspiration for us.
In our projects we seek to connect with social issues that are important and are a part of society and the world. In this way, we attract not only art connoisseurs, but also people who are interested in societal topics first and art next.
In addition, we like to give people an active role as creators, advisors or volunteers. This public-oriented approach creates recognition and ‘ownership’ among our visitors. In this way CBK Zuidoost contributes to intercultural image production and inclusive perspectives in contemporary visual art.

Testimonial
