New! Keti Koti lesson pack – make your own poster

How do you ensure that past mistakes are not repeated? By continuing to talk and learn about them. That is why we commemorate, and that is why it is important that this commemoration be done structurally.

CBK Zuidoost wants to keep the history of slavery in the spotlight with, among other things, a specially developed series of lessons for the upper classes of primary schools. Children get to work themselves: they make a poster about Keti Koti.

Reason
The reason is the book Ala sma tori, Keti Koti Verbeeld by Maartje Jaquet. The book contains all the portraits the artist made for the eponymous project commemorating the history of slavery. In 2022 she exhibited the portraits at Open Space Heesterveld of CBK Zuidoost, together with stories by and about the people portrayed – these are also included in the book.

Slavery History
In 2023, the abolition of slavery in the former Dutch colonies was in the spotlight because that was when it officially happened 150 years earlier for Curacao and Suriname. In 1863 the law went into effect but by 1873 it was actually done. Incidentally, slavery was abolished at different times in the colonial territories. On St. Maarten this happened “already” in 1848; on the French part of the island, slavery had already been abolished and many enslaved persons – logically – fled to the French part. In some indirectly governed parts of the Dutch East Indies, slavery continued to exist among the sultanates. On the island of Sumbawa this lasted until March 31, 1910; on Samosir even until 1914.

About the lesson series
In the lesson series, students are challenged to work on Keti Koti themselves by making a poster. The lesson series consists of three lessons:

Lesson 1 (1 hour): an interactive introduction by Maartje Jaquet a.o. about the abolition of slavery, the reason why she made her book, why everyone in the Netherlands should commemorate this day, the different names by which this day is known for example: Keti Koti, Emancipation Day, Dia di Lucha pa Libertat.

Lesson 2 (1.5 hours): creating a poster using the knowledge gained from lesson 1. This lesson is taught by another visual artist. Students will learn how to transform their message into images and text, including the use of homemade paint tools. They will also cover such things as fonts, lineation, shading, etc.

Lesson 3: presentation of posters at school led by own class teacher.

Costs and conditions
The cost is € 100, – per class
