Goodbye to Nelson Carrilho

This weekend, we bid farewell to Nelson Carrilho (1953). The Curaçaoan artist, who studied, lived and worked in the Netherlands, was known for his socially critical and socially engaged works, such as Mama Baranka, a sculpture commemorating the murdered Kerwin Duinmeijer.

Carrilho, who effortlessly combined Afro-Caribbean and Western elements, exhibited at CBK Zuidoost in 2015, as part of the group exhibition MOM: masks in contemporary art. He also ran popular bronze casting workshops.

The Kunstuitleen’s collection includes several bronzes by Carrilho, amongst them La femme et l’oiseau, We gaan naar Holland and Dragers van verre.
