The auction of Surinamese art, which took place last Saturday, November 22, raised over fourteen thousand euros. Twelve works were sold and the painting by Marcel Pinas was offered the highest price, no less than four thousand euros.
The auction was an initiative of the Suriname Year Calendar Foundation, which publishes a calendar every year, with proceeds going to art education for young people in Suriname. Board member Nellie Bakboord came up with the idea for a birthday calendar, featuring art by makers of Surinamese descent.
Giving Back
In exchange for a spot on that calendar, the artists made their work available for Giving Back – their way of giving something back to the society they grew up in. Several works have already been sold over the past year, and 12 works of art were offered for sale during the auction.
The auction was well attended and under the enjoyment of peanut and cassava soup and the inspired leadership of auctioneer Mr. Pim Deul, bidding was conducted in friendly competition. Before the start of the auction two more works were donated by Dan Ernst and Djon Seedorf. The total amount was €14,200.
Overjoyed
Board member Nellie Bakboord was overjoyed with the proceeds, which will benefit young people in Suriname. “Giving Back is a motto I use to knock on doors. It is the art of giving back and with this I want to start a chain a positive events, not only in the lives of others but also in my own life.” As far as she is concerned, the event is worth repeating, but at CBK Southeast. “That’s a prime location.”
