Workshop on cooking and identity

Geplaatst op , in

Cooking is a wonderful way to engage with identity, migration, memory, and to explore cultural exchange. Artist Hugo Palmar, artist-in-residence under the auspices of BijlmAIR, has therefore developed a special workshop intended to generate new recipes.

Living archives

In this workshop, participants are challenged to reflect on how food carries stories, history, and forms of knowledge, and how these are constantly changing through movement, encounters, and daily life.

Together, participants develop recipes as living archives—a kind of composition combining ingredients, memories, gestures, and personal stories. These new recipes demonstrate how different cultural influences can converge. Cooking thus becomes a method for collective reflection, navigating differences, and imagining new forms of connection.

Inspired by the project Transidentiteitstafel, the workshop views identity as something fluid, relational, and constantly shaped through contact with others.

Program

The workshop is structured as follows:

1. Participants introduce themselves through a food memory or an ingredient that is important to them, followed by an explanation of the ‘Transidentiteitstafel’ project.

2. A short presentation on food history, migration, and colonial exchange.

3. Participants engage with ingredients, using scent, touch, taste, sound, and observation to reflect on the memories, emotions, places, and people that emerge.

4. Collaborative creation of a recipe through dialogue, negotiation, improvisation, and care. 5. The workshop concludes with the preparation.

Practical info

The workshop takes place on September 24 at the BijlmAIR Studio, Heesterveld 69-71.
