Against the backdrop of 150 years of Indian indentured labour migration, 10 artists who are descendants of Indian indentured labourers affirm the importance of sensing and the senses when trying to make sense of (colonial) history and its present-day lived reality. Departing from decolonial, intersectional, (trans)feminist, and queer frameworks, the artists show how matter can be the site of revolt, a connection to ancestry, and the process of building relations between human and non-human kin.
NEXT Project
A Sense of Brown stems from CBK Zuidoost’s NEXT Project, in which young artists of colour are given the opportunity to curate an exhibition. This year CBK Zuidoost is giving Devika Chotoe the opportunity to gain experience as a curator.
Devika Chotoe (she/he) is a performance artist, choreographer, curator and writer. Her artistic and cultural practices are an exercise in embodying (social) change and initiating processes in which current power structures are dismantled and alternative worlds are created. Worlds which revolve around connection between different times, places and communities and celebrate the togetherness between humans, nature and beyond-human entities.
With this exhibition, Devika hopes to encourage the notion that politics is intertwined with the poetic. That while reason and representation often fail to encompass how complex notions like history and identity are truly experienced, emotions and sensory responses within the body may get closer to the core of things.
Opening
A Sense of Brown will be officially opened on September 14 by Tanja Jadnanansing, Chair of Amsterdam SouthEast. To bless the exhibition, Tina will perform the special dance ritual Londa ke naach. Afterwards, there will be snacks and drinks and the dance floor will be open for people to enjoy the music of Dizzi Geetha.
