Cahaya Maluku – Moluccan makers in the light

The exhibition marks 75 years of Moluccan presence in the Netherlands and brings together work by eight contemporary artists with Moluccan roots.

Coming from diverse generations, diasporas, and island groups, they demonstrate how multifaceted Moluccan identity is today. Central themes include memory, migration, family history, connection, and cultural transmission. At the same time, the exhibition focuses on the future and the new generation of creators who visualize their Moluccan background in a contemporary way.

The title Cahaya Maluku means ‘Light of the Moluccas’ and symbolizes hope, strength, visibility, and connection. Through painting, drawing, installations, and textiles, the artists explore subjects such as identity, colonial history, spirituality, and a sense of home. The exhibition shows that there is no single Moluccan story, but rather a rich variety of personal and collective perspectives. Additionally, Cahaya Maluku aims to contribute to the visibility of Moluccan cultural heritage and create space for encounter and dialogue with a broad audience.
