Local Heroes

With the series Local Heroes, CBK Zuidoost stimulates the local art climate. This season, three local artists present their work:

Hervé Hubert: Suburban Knights

With his photo series ‘Suburban Knights’, Hervé Hubert (1972) lets the local ‘knights’ of Zuidoost shine: residents of Amsterdam Zuidoost who dedicate themselves to their neighborhood in a unique and active way. The individual stories that Hubert showcases stand in direct contrast to the often dramatized and caricatured media portrayal of Zuidoost. This project is an attempt to break through the prejudices surrounding this ‘suburb’.

Hervé Hubert is from France and is a freelance photographer and web designer. He developed his own style early on through his interest in underground culture and his passion for music. For the past year, he has lived and worked in Amsterdam Zuidoost, where he quickly became actively involved in the Fatform art project on the Kraaiennest rooftop.

Neil Fortune and Angela Tellier: Face2face

Artists Neil Fortune and Angela Tellier have both participated in Face2face, a professionalization program for young creatives from Amsterdam Zuidoost. One of the assignments within this program is to curate an exhibition at CBK Zuidoost.

Angela Tellier (1985) studies photography at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam and works as a freelance photographer / artist. Tellier’s oeuvre is broad: she moves between the intersections of portraiture, still life, and fashion.

Neil Fortune (1983) creates texts, drawings, and installations with which he explores the space in which he exhibits. He creates situations or interventions through which both he and the visitor physically experience and reconsider their surroundings.

The exhibition at CBK Zuidoost will not be a conventional presentation of their work; Tellier and Fortune view the exhibition space as a blank canvas on which they will play with the presentation of their work and the way the visitor perceives it.
